A swimmer apparently drowned in the ocean off Kamilo Point in Ka‘u Friday evening.

According to a statement from the Hawaii County Fire Department, seven units, including a county helicopter responded to the report of a swimmer in distress at 9:48 p.m. The Coast Guard reportedly dispatched a C-130 airplane, an MH-65 Dolphin helicopter and a cutter to assist with the search.

The statement said difficult access to the remote shoreline resulted in a two-hour response time.

The swimmer’s body was located just before daybreak today and flown by the county helicopter to the Naalehu police station, where it was released to police.

No other information, including the age or gender of the victim, were immediately released.
