A beast is coming to the Palace Theater for the final summertime Friday Fright Night … and it’s from 20,000 fathoms.
This beastie will terrorize movie goers at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 16.
“The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms,” the 1953 classic, is a cautionary tale about the misuse of atomic bombs. Released from its frozen, hibernating state by an Arctic Circle bomb test, the beast begins to wreak a wide path of destruction as it travels southward toward New York City, the site of its ancient spawning grounds.
Can the might of the military hold off the terror of prehistoric destruction?!?
“The Beast” marked the first time creature icon Ray Harryhausen was given full control over the special effects, and boy, oh boy, did he seize the opportunity to create some fantastical sequences of classic creature mayhem.
“Beastie Boy,” as the Palace staff affectionately call him, will be available for selfies in the lobby.
“The response to our Friday Fright Nights film series has been overwhelmingly positive,” said Palace director of operations Phillips Payson. “The 1950s spawned an amazing array of creature features. We are pleased to present these amazing black and white classics to a whole new audience. ‘The Beast of 20,000 Fathoms’ is our final summer offering, but we’re looking forward to next summer, when the horror comes from outer space!”
