Something about the par-3 holes Tuesday at Leilehua Golf Course didn’t suit Isaac Jaffurs.
The former UH-Hilo golfer carded a 1-over 71 in a U.S. Mid-Amateur qualifier on Oahu, earning second alternate honors on Oahu.
Jaffurs finishes three shots behind Jay Livsey, the medalist and lone qualifier, with three of his four bogeys coming on par 3s.
Joshua Irving shot a 70 and was first alternate.
Hilo’s Chris Igawa and Kailua-Kona’s John Shaw tied for ninth at 76 in the 16-player field and Hilo’s Shaun Downie carded a 79.
• Earlier in the month at Leilehua, Jaffurs claimed the mid-amateur division at the U.S. Army Hawaii Invitational Golf Tournament, finishing with a 69 to claim a five-stroke victory at 3-under 213.
• Hilo’s Isaiah Kanno shot a 7-over 77 last week in the final round of the Boys Junior PGA Championship, leaving him 6-over and in a tie for 68 (76 made the cut) in Hartford, Conn.
Kanno had a chance to finish below par after posting a 65 and consecutive 72s in the first three rounds.
Jack Heath of Charlotte, N.C., closed with a 62 to get to 21-under 259, winning by a stroke.
• There are six Big Islanders in the field this weekend at the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association’s mixed team championships at Poipu Bay Golf Course on Kauai.
Kanno will team with Hilo’s Chanelle Hwang, while Hilo’s Lacey Uchida, the BIIF champion, will pair with Jake Sequin, the HHSAA boys champion from Mid-Pacific Oahu.
Keaau’s Dillon Ah Chong, Waikoloa’s Ethan Jaehn and Hilo Aidan Oki are also participating in a format that hasteams play best ball on Saturday and alternate shot on Sunday.
Oki will play with Honolulu’s Karissa Kilby, the 2019 Manoa Cup runner-up and a member, along with Uchida, of Hawaii’s co-championship team last week at the Girls Junior America’s Cup.
