Maui golfer paces fast start for Hawaii girls at Jr. Cup

Maui’s Lana Calibuso-Kwee had the hot hand Tuesday as a Hawaii team that included two Big Islanders shot 2-over and was just a shot off the lead after the first round at the Girls Junior America’s Cup in Murrieta, Calif.

Calibuso-Kwee shot a 5-under 67 and led the field of 72 by two strokes, and Hilo’s Lacey Uchida carded a 75 and was tied for 18th. Kailua-Kona’s Yoonjeong Huh was another shot back and also contributed to Hawaii’s score of 218. Oahu’s Karissa Kilby came in with an 81.

Calibuso-Kwee played bogey-free for Hawaii, which trailed only Southern California and Washington in the 18-team field.

The 54-hole event runs through Thursday.

Scores soar at Dave & Buster’s

Scoring was hard to come by at the Dave & Buster’s Junior Classic, where only one golfer came finished fewer than five shots from par at Oahu’s Ewa Beach Golf Club.

Hilo’s Kailey Oki finished fifth in the girls 15-18 flight, making two birdies during a 77 on Monday and carding an 83 on Tuesday to finish 16-over, which was six shots behind the winner, Honolulu’s Shayna Lu.

In boys 13-14, Hilo Dysen Park was sixth at 19-over (79-84) in the Hawaii Junior Golf Association event. Keaau’s Dillon Ah Chong was 21-over (80-85) in a tie for 10th in the older boys division, which was claimed by Honolulu’s Marshall Kim Jr., who closed with a 72 to get to 4-over.

Hilo High bowling meeting

A tryout meeting for Hilo High bowlers an their parents will be held at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 7 and 8 in room C125 ( across of the library).

Waimea Athletics

Waimea Athletics, in partnership with DNA Basketball Academy, is accepting biddy basketball registrations until Aug. 15 for ages 5-6 and 7-8.

The fee is $30 per person and includes a full sublimation uniform jersey and team equipment.

A free basketball clinic will be held 4:30-5:30 p.m. from Aug 13-15 from at the Waimea District Park gym. The league is scheduled to begin in September.

Hilo seeks coaches

Hilo High School is accepting applications for a softball head coach and a head boys tennis coach.

Any interested applicants can pick up forms at the school’s main office, and the deadline to apply is Aug. 16.

Age group volleyball, hoops meeting slated

The recreation division of Parks and Recreation will hold its organizational meeting for age-group volleyball at 5 p.m. Aug. 6 at Aunty Sally’s Luau House. There will be 14-and-under, 12U and 10U age divisions, and this meeting is for coaches or representatives of teams entering the league.

League rules and format will be discussed along with team packets. The league is scheduled to run Sept. 9-Dec. 5, from Monday-Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
