Hawaii Volcanoes National Park officials identified a man killed in a single-car collision on Highway 11 within the park boundaries as 57-year-old Jonathan Milo Brown of Grinnell, Iowa.

Brown, a professor at Grinnell College, was driving Hilo-bound on Highway 11 in the Ka‘u Desert area of the park just before 2 p.m. Thursday when his older-model SUV crashed near the 35-mile marker. Brown was found by park rangers pinned beneath the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the Hilo Medical Center later that day.

The incident remains under investigation by park rangers with the assistance of Hawaii Police Department.
