Police arrest 22 for DUI

During the week of July 15-21, Hawaii Island police arrested 22 motorists for DUI. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. One was under the age of 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 11; South Hilo, six; and Puna, five.

There were multiple other arrests stemming from the DUIs, including four for driving without a license and nine for driving for without insurance. There were also two arrests for other related moving or regulatory violations.

So far this year, there have been 626 DUI arrests compared to 638 during the same period last year, a decrease of 1.9 percent.

There have been 523 major accidents so far this year compared to 704 during the same period last year, a decrease of 25.7 percent.

To date, there were 14 official traffic fatalities compared to 20 fatalities for the same time last year, a decrease 0f 30 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
