Richard James Doyas, 85, of Pahoa died July 9 at home. Born in San Francisco, he was a retired nuclear physicist for Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory and member of Center for Spiritual Living in Keaau. No services. Survived by wife, Jenifer Doyas of Pahoa; daughters, Noreen (Graham Matthews) Doyas of Redding, Calif., and Carolyn (Steve Roadhouse) Fencil of Lewiston, Calif.; son, Gregory (Jennifer) Doyas of Palo Alto, Calif.; sister, Dolores Ott of Chaska, Minn.; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Hubert Frances Griep, 89, of Volcano died July 9 at home. Born in Honolulu, he was a retired district Sales Manager for the former GTE Yellow Pages. Visitation 9-10 a.m. Saturday, July 27, at St. Theresa Church, 18-1355 Volcano Highway in Mountain View. Mass at 10 a.m. Survived by wife, Harriet “Dee” Griep; son, Michael Griep; daughter, Holly (Len) Waters; three grandchildren and a great-grandchild. Arrangements by Ballard Family Mortuary.

Masayo Seo Hamora, 86, of Virgie, Ky., formerly of Paauhau and Waimea, died July 15 in Kentucky. Born in Honokaa, she was a cook, housekeeper and owner of the former Masayo’s Deli in Waimea. Private memorial at a later date. Survived by son, Lee (Jean) Hamora of Oregon; daughter, Patty Chiappetta (John) of Virgie; hanai daughters, Brenda Figgeroa, Carla Costa, Donna May Costa and Evelyn Ryberg; sister-in-law, Lydia Seo; eight grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and hanai grandchildren.

Kazue Matsumoto, 96, of Hilo died July 8 at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born in Hilo, she was retired from the former Hilo Quality Cleaners. Private services held. No flowers or koden (monetary gifts). Eleanor Teresa Mendonca, 92, of Hilo died July 11 at Hale Anuenue Restorative Care Center in Hilo. Born in Hilo, she was a pineapple and produce worker for Del Monte and member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. Visitation 8-10 a.m. Tuesday, July 23, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Memorial Mass at 10 a.m. Casual attire. Urn burial to follow at Homelani Memorial Park. Survived by sisters, Margaret A. Mendonca Cambra, Marie A. Mendonca and Bernice B. Stephanie “Stephie” Linda Austria Moniz, 65, of Olaa died June 15 at home. Born in Hakalau, she was a retired educational assistant for Pahoa High and Intermediate School, former chef at Roy’s, alaka‘i for Te Ha‘a Lehua and former member of Halau o Kekuhi. Phil Slott, 76, of Waimea died July 10 in Waimea. Born in New York City, he was a creative director and advertising executive known for iconic slogans including Gillette’s “Never let ‘em see you sweat,” and the U.S. Navy’s “It’s not just a job, it’s an adventure.” He served in the Army Reserves and was a published author. Celebration of life 4 p.m. Saturday, July 27, at Kawaihae Canoe Club. No flowers. Memorial donations to Hawaii Community Foundation Attn: Phil Slott Fund for Survivors of Traumatic Brain Injuries. Survived by brother, Dan Slott; a niece, a nephew, a grandniece and a grandnephew.
