Police arrest 14 for DUI

During the week of June 24-30, Hawaii Island police arrested 14 motorists for DUI. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, six; South Hilo, five; South Kohala, two; and Puna, one.

So far this year, there have been 565 DUI arrests compared to 579 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2.4 percent.

Arrests for charges stemming from the 14 DUI arrests include one for open container of alcohol, one for speeding, one for driving without a license, one for marijuana possession and four for driving without insurance. In addition, there were three arrests for other moving and/or regulatory violations.

There have been 454 major accidents so far this year compared to 649 during the same period last year, a decrease of 30 percent.

To date, there have been 14 official traffic fatalities this year compared to 15 at the same time last year, a decrease of 6.7 percent.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
