Bring new or gently worn aloha shirts — any size, men’s or women’s — to the Friends of Lili‘uokalani Gardens table from 7-11 a.m. Thursday, July 4, during the VFW Post 3830 Hilo Bay 5K Salute to Veterans and send some aloha to the men and women serving in the U.S. military.

The Friends will be collecting shirts and other care package items for soldiers.

The shirts will be noted and rolled, with “Thank you” notes placed in pockets and Army rolled, and shipped to units requesting shirts from the nonprofit Hawaiian Shirts For Deployed Soldiers based in South Carolina.

Anyone who cannot come to the gardens Thursday but still wants to donate can send shirts, care package items or contributions to help via the mail to: Hawaiian Shirt Project, Attn: Gwen Pollard, 217 High Ridge Court, Easley, S.C. 29642.
