The U.S. Department of Transportation will award four airports in Hawaii a total of $10,055,250 to purchase aircraft rescue and firefighting vehicles, reconstruct taxiways and install runway lighting, U.S. Sen. Brian Schatz, D-Hawaii, a member of the Senate Appropriations and Commerce, Science and Transportation Committees, announced Monday.
The funding is being awarded through the DOT’s Airport Improvement Program.
On the Big Island, Hilo International Airport will receive $1,354,500 and Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport at Keahole will receive $837,000 to purchase aircraft rescue and firefighting vehicles.
Additionally, Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu will receive $870,000 to install runway lighting, Kahului Airport on Maui will receive $3.6 million to reconstruct its taxiway and $693,750 to purchase aircraft rescue and fire fighting vehicles and the state will receive $2.7 million for comprehensive planning activities.
