Police arrest woman after shooting in Keaukaha

Hawaii Island Police are investigating a shooting that occurred early this morning in Hilo’s Keaukaha neighborhood.

At about 1 a.m., officers responded to a disturbance and discovered a 36-year-old Hilo man lying on the front lawn of a home in the 100 block of Kauhane Avenue.

Hawaii Fire Department medics found the man had had sustained a gunshot wound to his torso. He was taken to Hilo Medical Center in serious condition.

At about 3:40 a.m., officers arrested 43-year-old Chanell Evangelista-Kaleiwahea of Hilo on suspicion of attempted second-degree.

She remains in custody while detectives continue to investigate.
