A beautiful 40-year-old quilt, made in 1979 by a community quilting class, was recently discovered at Mountain View Public and School Library in Mountain View.
Each square was signed in stitching by its maker, only one of whom has been identified by a relative.
Charlene Asato, who was at the library giving a book-binding workshop, saw the quilt and said, “That’s my Mom, Janet Asato, in the upper right hand corner.” She thought the square featured an anthurium because her parents used to raise them in Mountain View.
It’s this kind of oral history that a quilt can bring about.
If you know anyone connected with the list of makers’ names below, please call library manager Bonnie Perry at 808-968-2322 or email her at bonnie.perry@librarieshawaii.org.
If enough folks with a connection to the quilt can be found, the library staff would like to hold a celebration and include them in it.
Meanwhile, it’s prominently hanging on a main wall in the library for all to see.
The makers’ names on the quilt are: Nooake, M. Kimoto, K. English, Y. Momohara, Betty Stone, E. Scondolis, Janet Asato, E Ura, V. Milon, P. Parise and J. Nakamura.
