The 67th annual Hilo Orchid Show and Sale is coming up the last weekend of this month. Show chairman Karl Mendonca recently announced that this year’s theme is “Orchid Odyssey.

“Odyssey really captures the spirit of orchids in so many ways,” Mendonca said. “The 19th century orchid hunters traveled the world, searching through remote tropical jungles to find spectacular new species for their wealthy sponsors back in Europe. Even today, hobbyists visit commercial orchid nurseries hoping to find the latest manmade hybrids with incredible flowers.”

Hilo Orchid Society president Dana Culleney showed off the artwork for the show, featuring a Hawaiian voyager with orchids trailing behind his canoe.

“Karl asked local artist Esther Szgedey to again design our logo after the great job she did two years ago,” Culleney said.

Her art can be found at One Gallery in downtown Hilo, and she also will be available at the show. The 67th annual orchid show and sale is slated for June 28-30 at Edith Kanaka‘ole Stadium in Hilo.
