Police arrest 22 for DUI

During the week of May 27-June 2, Hawaii Island police arrested 22 motorists for DUI. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. Three were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, nine; Kona, seven; Ka‘u and South Kohala, two each; Puna and Hamakua, one each.

So far this year, there have been 491 DUI arrests compared to 487 during the same period last year, an increase of 0.82 percent.

There have been 387 major accidents so far this year compared to 561 during the same period last year, a decrease of 31 percent.

To date, there have been 11 official traffic fatalities, compared to 14 fatalities at this time last year, a decrease of 21.4 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
