Costco should come

Since moving to Hilo from the mainland 13 years ago, I have always been amazed by how crowded the stores are when shopping for groceries or visiting Walmart or Target.

I am amazed that we have only one Costco on this island, and it is a two-hour drive from Hilo. From any sources, including Costco and Trader Joe’s (when visiting back on the mainland), I have inquired about why they have not brought their stores to our bustling community. I received various responses: from that they are thinking about it, to it’s not profitable enough for them to do so.

If that is the case, then why is the Kona Costco so crowded all the time (in part because so many Hilo residents drive over and shop there), and why do so many locals who visit the mainland always shop at Trader Joe’s, bringing back gifts and goodies they know they can’t get here?

I don’t get it. Does someone else know why? I’m not a marketer, but I know what I see and hear from others who live here, and I know these companies would do very well if they set up shop here in Hilo.

Laws don’t stop abortions

Last week, I mailed letters to each U.S. Supreme Court justice. I see that the “American Idea” that was created by the founding fathers is nearly lost.

I do NOT support abortion, but I do support individual rights. A woman has a right to choose — that is as valid as our Second Amendment right!

Laws have never stopped abortion. Religions can through three steps: Teach each child the responsibilities of parenting; council each expectant mother, regardless of her social status; and make it so every unwanted child is assured it will have the opportunity to flourish.

Religions, through churches, have failed and fought this, in my opinion, and instead they spend resources to infiltrate government. That is the antithesis of the wisdom of the “American Idea” and our founding fathers.

I am simply a messenger with a clear thought of freedom of religion — and from religions — for all.
