Not good company

In response to James G. Borden (Tribune-Herald, Your Views, May 22), who explained the attack mode of the anti-women’s movement to roll back Roe v. Wade, in which he listed five states — Alabama, Georgia, Ohio, Kentucky and Mississippi — as “moving forward” on this goal, I would like to point out that on math and writing exams, Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia all scored lower than the national average.

On the U.S News and World Report’s “Best States Ranking” on health care, Alabama is 49th, Mississippi is 48th, Kentucky is 40th, Ohio is 39th and Georgia is 17th.

These are states that have been closing women’s clinics. Are these the states on which we want to model ourselves?

Attacked in Hilo

I was attacked by a homeless couple with 18 dogs and one cat Friday, Feb. 15, while trying to help a puppy not get hit by a car that was in the street. I had to go to the emergency room.

I never imagined I would be in such danger in downtown Hilo by the bandstand, but now see how awful our community has become and how the authorities allow it.

I’m lucky — the male was 200-plus pounds, brandishing a metal pole, and blindsided me while I was attempting to get away from his wife, who attacked me. I was saved by a couple of guys who I was unfortunately not able to thank in person. If it weren’t for them, I’m certain I would have had more serious injuries.

The attacking couple got a slap on the wrist, are back by the bandstand, and have two dogs (probably not legally registered with the Hawaii Island Humane Society). I have a $700 medical bill, and HIHS won’t tell me what happened to the 16 dogs that were taken from them.

Next time, maybe I’ll get more injured, then the authorities might HAVE to do something positive to keep us all safe. I know I’m not the only person who has been attacked in the past couple months by this couple, and likely not the last.
