Kona man killed in traffic crash near airport

A 70-year-old Ocean View man died after a single vehicle collision on Sunday, (May 5), in Kailua-Kona on the Queen Kaahumanu Highway .1 mile south of the Keahole Airport road.

Police identified the man as Michael A. McCormick.

Officers responding to a 9:20 a.m. call determined that a northbound red 2010 Chevrolet Colorado pickup truck crossed the merge lane on the mauka side of the roadway. The truck continued on the rock shoulder/embankment and finally came to rest on the right northbound lane on the Queen Kaahumanu Highway, police said.

McCormick was taken to Kona Community Hospital and was pronounced dead at 1:18 p.m.

The 70-year-old male driver was transported to the Kona Community Hospital where he was later pronounced dead at 1:18 p.m.

Police do not believe speed or alcohol are factors in the crash.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

McCormick’s death is the 7th official traffic fatality this year compared to nine at this time last year.
