Firefighters from Waiakea rescue station saved a dog that had slid partway down a cliff at Honolii Monday while chasing a mongoose.

The five-man crew responding to a 9:43 a.m. call found the 6-year-old pit-bull mix perched on a small outcrop about halfway down an 80-foot cliff face off Kahoa Street.

The crew set up a rope system and lowered a rescue specialist, who connected a rope to the dog’s chest harness. Other crew members raised both the pooch and the firefighter back to the top, where doggy and daddy were reunited.
