With the team competitions locked up, all eyes are turning to individual performances in the final BIIF golf matches before the league’s individual championships, which is set to take place April 28 and April 30.
At Mauna Lani Country Club’s north course last Wednesday, Titan Oshura showed golfers around the Big Island to not count out Kealakehe when he took low medalist honors with a 1-under-par, 71. He was the only player under par on the day.
“Titan has always had the capability and skill set to perform well,” said Waveriders’ head coach Lee Kagawa. “I have known him since he was five or six years old and he has a passion for golf. This performance was just about everything finally coming together for him.”
It is been a long time since Kealakehe had a low medalist at a league golf match. When asked, school officials and coaches were not able to pinpoint the last time it happened. Kealakehe’s Steve Kim did win a match at Hilo Muni in March of 2012, which could have been the last time the feat was accomplished by a Waveriders golfer.
Oshura edged out Kamehameha’s Pono Yanagi by two strokes. One shot back of Yanagi was Waiakea’s Isaiah Kanno. Wrapping up the top four was Hilo’s Aaron Castillo with a 3-over, 75.
As a team, Kealakehe placed second behind Waiakea with a score of 342. Waiakea finished at 317. Freshman Ethan Jaehn shot a 79, and is normally the leader in the club house for the Waveriders.
“We have a couple of good aces that can both shoot around par on a good day,” Kagawa said. “They should keep Kealakehe competitive for the next couple of years.”
Hilo (354) and Kamehameha (383) wrapped up the team scoring in the boys competition.
On the girls side, Waiakea’s Lacey Uchida led the scoring with a low medalist round of 1-over, 73. She was followed by her teammates Kailey Oki (77) and Kiersten Saludares (78) for a team score of 228. Hilo’s Chanelle Hwang rounded up the top four with a 79.
Teams will be back in action Wednesday, wrapping up the regular season with a match at Kohanaiki Golf and Ocean Club.
