Saturday’s track and field meet in Waimea was highlighted by an ever-present wind and handful of 2019 BIIF-best performances.
Waiakea’s Cheyn Tam-Switzer recorded a personal-record in winning the 200-meter dash in 22.87 seconds, a time that ranks among the top 10 in the state this season. He also was ran a leg on the Warriors’ 4×400 relay team, which crossed in 3:34.25, reaching the top spot in the league by going almost two seconds faster than Konawaena’s winning time the previous week at Waiakea. Samuel Frazier-Jenkins, Elijah Carigon and Magnus Namohala-Roloos also passed the baton.
Konawaena’s girls had a monopoly on the two relay races until Waiakea’s Tiani Kow, Aiyanna Fourshey, Taysia Rocha and Sydirah Aricayos unseated them Saturday, going 4:21.86 in the 4×400.
Keaau’s Cody Ah Nee is the new thrower to beat in the BIIF. Ah Nee PR’d in the discus with a toss of 147 feet, 10 inches, the fourth-best effort in Hawaii so far. Waiakea Abel Pacatang (147 on April 6) and Kamehameha’s Teva Reynolds (146-1, April 6) rank fifth and sixth in the state, respectively.
Ah Nee also has the top BIIF distance in the shot put, 2.5 inches ahead of Pacatang.
In the girls discus, Waiakea’s Fui Free Tevaseu is the standard-bearer by 2 feet after a toss of 108-3, which is No. 5 in the state.
Along with Ah Nee and Free Tevaseu, the other double individual winner Saturday was Kealakehe’s Leann Hamilton (800 and 1,500).
Tam-Switzer also was a member on the Warriors’ 4×100 winning relay squad.
The remainder of the season will be played out at Kamehameha’s Paiea Stadium, with a meet Saturday and the league championships set for April 26-27.
