Police are charging a 36-year-old Hilo man for escaping from a correctional facility last month.

Acting on a tip, Larry Kamalii was apprehended without incident at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in Mountain View by a police task force. He was returned to the custody of the Department of Public Safety following his daytime escape on March 1 from Hale Nani Correctional Center on Hilo’s southern outskirts.

Two Puna men, 54-year-old Rodney Lorenzo and 52-year-old Joseph Gonsalves, were arrested on suspicion of hindering prosecution for allegedly assisting Kamalii while he was on the run. They were later released without being charged, pending further investigation.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call the police nonemergency line at 935-3311 or Crime Stoppers at 961-2385.
