Police arrest 15 for DUI

Between April 4-7, Hawaii Island police arrested 15 motorists for DUI. Five of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident; none were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, eight; Puna, five; South Hilo and South Kohala, one each.

So far this year, there have been 320 DUI arrests compared to 298 during the same period last year, an increase of 7.4 percent.

There have been 254 major accidents so far this year compared to 355 during the same period last year, a decrease of 28.5 percent.

To date, there have been five official traffic fatalities, compared to seven fatalities at the same time last year. This represents a decrease 28.6 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
