Police say a pedestrian died early this morning from injuries sustained in a hit-and-run collision on Highway 11, north of Makalika Street in the Panaewa area of Hilo.

The identification of the victim is still pending.

Officers responding to a 1:50 a.m. call determined that the man was struck while on the road, in Hilo-bound lanes of Highway 11. The responsible vehicle fled the scene, police said.

The man, who was unresponsive, was pronounced dead at 4:51 a.m. at Hilo Medical Center.

Police believe speed and/or inattention may have been factors in the crash.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

A negligent homicide investigation has been opened and police are asking for anyone who may have witnessed the crash or have information leading to the identity of the responsible person to contact Officer Blayne Matsui at (808) 961-2329.

Those who prefer anonymity can call Crime Stoppers at 961-8300.

This is the fifth traffic fatality this year compared to seven at this time last year.
