During the week of March 4-10, Hawaii Island Police arrested 36 motorists for DUI.
Four of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident. Five were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 15; South Hilo, 10; Puna, six; South Kohala, four; and Hamakua, one.
So far this year, there have been 242 DUI arrests compared to 207 during the same period last year, an increase of 16.9 percent.
There have been 184 major accidents so far this year compared to 235 during the same period last year, a decrease of 21.7 percent.
To date, there have been two official traffic fatalities, compared to five fatalities at the same time last year. That represents a 60 percent decrease for fatalities.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
