Hilo Drag strip results

The Big Island Auto Club held its season-opening drag races last weekend at Hilo Drag Strip.

Saturday

Mega bracket race

Winner: Randal Jardine, Laupahoehoe, in an Oldsmobile Cutlass (13.01 sec/102 mph).

Runner-up: Caisey Francis, Paauilo, in a Chevy Vega (11.13/116). Jardine won with a better reaction time.

Fastest car on the track: Kiah Taroma, Hilo, in a Camaro (7.75/176).

Sunday

Mega Bracket Race

Winner: Ron Dugon, Pahoa, in a Mazda pickup truck (17.79/94)

Runner-up: Tony Andrade, Pahala, in a Nova (10.24/124). Dugon won on a better reaction time.

Motorcycle bracket race

Winner: Jay Camero, Pepeekeo, on a Suzuki (9.51 sec/143 mph).

Runner-up: Rylan Grillot, Hilo, on a Suzuki (10.82 sec/79 mph). Grilot lost the race because he drew a red light.

Junior dragster bracket

Winner: Griffin Augustin, Hilo, (9.65/64).

Runner-up: Shaun Kahaunaele, Hilo, (10.04/61). Shaun broke out of bracket.

Other finishers: Tristan De Coito, Hilo, and K.J. Kekaualua, Mt. View.

Next race: March 9-10.

Strong showing from jiu jitsu

Rydge DeMotta came out on top in a field of 39 and was one of three keiki from an East Hawaii traveling squad to capture a gold medal at the Pan Kids IBJJF Jiu-Jitsu Championship in Long Beach, Calif.

Tylie Peralta and Kaloni Brown also took home gold, while Kainalu Kaku, Ocean DeMotta and Derek Sakaguchi collected silver medals. Elias Sakaguchi and Levin Peralta claimed bronze and Liam Woolley finished fourth.

The team was made of nine members from Penn jiu jitsu and three from Honomu Nova Uniao. The coaches were Kim Terra and Kaynan Kaku.
