Indict those responsible

Regarding President Trump’s family separation policy: Apparently, the U.S. government Office of Refugee Resettlement “has no definitive record of how many minors,” seized from their migrant parents, were “sent to shelters, to the custody of family or to other guardians in foster care.”

The “ORR was unable to provide a more precise estimate or specific information about these children’s placements (for example, whether the children were released to sponsors who were relatives, sponsors who were nonrelatives, foster care, etc.)”

Would this “etc.” include child sex-traffickers, who will be a pack of wolves circling this family separation chaos?

Trump political adviser Steven Miller, architect of the ultimate solution to the migrant family problem (seize their children), and Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, implementer of this policy, should be indicted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity.

Save the center

I’m deeply saddened about the possibility of the imminent permanent closure of the Children’s Discovery Center on Oahu as the result of unsustainable attendance because of the presence of drug-addicted and mentally unstable homeless who resist outreach services and refuse to leave.

If this situation existed at the zoo, Bishop Museum or ‘Iolani Palace … there would be a rightly deserved howl of public outrage.

The problem is solvable. It demands a strong will by the city and/or state to do everything possible … to protect the center with increased security and maintenance. Immediately and permanently.

It might be costly, but nowhere near as incalculable as the cost of losing our cherished center.

Our keiki and their families must be able to continue enjoying a memorable safe, pleasant and creative experience at this happy place. That delightful building filled with joyous laughter welcomes, inspires and unleashes the playful imagination of children (and the inner child of the adult) found nowhere else for 2,500 miles.

Please keep the center’s star on the cheerful yellow smokestack and the smiling sun logo shining brightly as a beacon to our children.

Save the center. Protect the present. Preserve the future. Always.
