Police arrest 19 for DUI

During the week of Jan. 14-20, Hawaii Island Police arrested 19 motorists for DUI.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona and Puna, seven each; South Hilo, four; and South Kohala, one.

So far this year, there have been 49 DUI arrests compared to 50 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2 percent.

There have been 39 major accidents so far this year compared to 52 during the same period last year, a decrease of 25 percent.

To date, there have been two official traffic fatalities this year, compared to none at the same time last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
