January is National Blood Donor Month and the Blood Bank of Hawaii is hosting several East Hawaii blood drives this week:
• 8:45 a.m.-3:30 p.m. today (Jan. 23) at Hilo High School gym.
• 7:45 a.m.-2:45 p.m. Thursday (Jan. 24) at Kamehameha Schools Hawaii’s WCL integrated facility in the multipurpose room.
• 8:15 a.m.-2:30 p.m. Friday (Jan. 25) at Waiakea High School in the library.
According to the blood bank, a total of 200 blood donations are needed every day in Hawaii to maintain an adequate blood supply and fulfill the state’s needs.
Because each pint of whole blood is separated into platelets, plasma and red blood cells, one donation can help the lives of up to three people.
Donors must be in good health, 18 or older (16- and 17-year-old donors with signed Blood Bank of Hawaii parent/legal guardian consent), weigh 110 pounds or more (additional height/weight requirements apply for female donors ages 16-18) and should bring photo ID with date of birth.
