Honokaa’s boys soccer team saved its season, and now it will have to sweat it out to see if Konawaena and Kohala can do the same for theirs’.
Koa Miche scored two goals Saturday as the Dragons turned the tables against the Cowboys to the tune of a 6-0 victory at home that revived their BIIF Division II postseason hopes.
With three teams vying for two playoff berths, Honokaa (5-9-1, 16 points) moved back into third place in D-II, one point ahead of the Wildcats, with a bounce-back effort that came two days after Kohala beat the Dragons 3-2 in Kapaau.
“(Our) backs were against the wall,” coach Maurice Miranda said. “I think they were determined not to lose on their home field.
“We came out and put a lot of pressure on them.”
Dylan Velez, Daneau Domingo, Haven Vento and Tyler Germain also scored, and Malachi Pesta and Ethan Seo-Sandoval each had a hand in the shutout for the Dragons, who completed the regular season and will wait to see how Konawaena (5-9, 15) and Kohala (4-8, 12) fare this week. The Wildcats, who beat Keaau 5-1 on Friday, finish with a tough home match against Kealakehe on Wednesday. The Cowboys host winless Ka’u on Tuesday and finish at Makua Lani on Thursday.
Miranda said Kohala was without the services of Julian Parks, which allowed the Dragons to pay more attention to Shiloh Perez.
“I wish them well,” Miranda said of Kohala and Konawaena. “But, yeah, we’ll be rooting for them to lose at least once.”
