Police arrest 14 for DUI

During the week of Jan. 1-6, Hawaii Island police arrested 14 motorists for DUI. One of the drivers was involved in a traffic collision and one was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, six; South Hilo, four; South Kohala, two; Puna and Ka‘u, one each.

So far this year, there have been 14 DUI arrests compared to 17 during the same period last year, a decrease of 17.7 percent.

There have been 14 major accidents so far this year compared to 16 during the same period last year, a decrease of 12.5 percent.

To date, there has been one official traffic fatality compared to none for the same time period last year.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
