Police arrest 19 for DUI

During the week of Dec. 24-30, Hawaii Island police arrested 19 motorists for DUI.

Six of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident and one was younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, nine; South Hilo, six; Puna and South Kohala, two each.

As of Dec. 30, there were 1,092 DUI arrests in 2018 compared to 1,156 during the same period in 2017, a decrease of 5.5 percent.

There were 1,135 major accidents by Dec. 30 compared to 1,365 during the same period in 2017, a decrease of 16.8 percent.

For 2018, there were 32 official traffic fatalities, compared to 32 official fatalities for the same time last year, although there were four fatalities in 2017 not counted toward the official count because they occurred on private property.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
