Catch a glimpse of the evolution of social dancing in a special evening program, ‘Dancing Through The Decades,’ on Dec. 14 at the Hilo Elks Lodge.

In addition to the whirlwind tour of social dance styles popular from the 1920s until now, the evening offers plenty of social dancing opportunities, a three-course dinner, and a beginner-friendly dance lesson. The evening starts with the lesson at 6:30 p.m. and ends at 10 p.m.

The special program will feature dances ranging from Viennese waltz to disco and Lindy hop, performed by dance instructors and students from Hilo, Kona and Waimea. There will be one brief dance demonstration for each decade. Music for open dancing will cover a broad spectrum of ballroom, club, latin and line dance tunes to suit everyone’s tastes.

“This is an opportunity to showcase the Big Island’s talented dancers,” says coordinator Denise Westbrook. “It will be fun for everyone, no matter what your dance background is.”

The Hilo Elks Lodge, located at 150 Kinoole Street, is a non-smoking venue and offers a spacious dance floor. There is ample parking in the rear of the building, off Ululani Street.

Tickets are $20 pre-sale or $25 at the door, and only $10 for children under 12. For information or tickets, call or text Westbrook at 970-739-6771.
