Police arrest 23 for DUI

During the week of Nov. 12-18, Hawaii Island police arrested 23 motorists for DUI. Three of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident.

The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, 12; Kona, eight; and Puna, three.

So far this year, there have been 967 DUI arrests compared to 1,021 during the same period last year, a decrease of 5.3 percent.

There have been 1,024 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,193 during the same period last year, a decrease of 14.1 percent.

To date, there have been 27 official traffic fatalities, compared to 30 official fatalities for the same time last year. This represents a decrease of 10 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
