Lance Arruda, 70, of Kurtistown died Oct. 7 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Hilo, he was a retired mason for Isemoto Contracting Co., member of the Hawaii Masons and Plasterers Union Local 1 and veteran of the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Visitation 6-7 p.m. Monday (Oct. 29) at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Wake service 7 p.m. Visitation 8-9:30 a.m. Oct. 30 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Hilo. Funeral Mass at 10 a.m. Burial to follow at Homelani Memorial Park. Casual attire. Peregrina “Peling” Lopez Ramos Macahito, 87, of Hilo died Oct. 17 at Hawaii Care Choices Pohai Malama Facility. Born in the Philippines, she was a housewife. Herbert Kualoha Maunu Jr., 78, of Kailua-Kona died Oct. 9 at home. Born in North Kohala, he was a specialist and radiation monitor with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, member of The Royal Order of Kamehameha Moku O Kona, former board member of La’i Opua Homeowners Association, member of the National Federation of the Blind and served in the U.S. Navy. Celebration of life 10 a.m. Saturday (Oct. 27) at the La‘i Opua Community Center. Survived by wife, Virginia Maunu of Kailua-Kona; son, Herbert (Marla) Maunu III of Las Vegas; sisters, Emily Kamaka of Kona, Kaala (John) Kahalioumi of North Kohala; brothers, Kamuela Maunu of North Kohala, Jesse Kaona of Las Vegas, Eddie Kaona of California; two granddaughters; nieces and nephews. Bernard Faisca Torres Jr., 61, of Hilo died Sept. 21 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Honokaa, he was a warehouse manager/truck driver with the Food Basket, Hawaii Island’s food bank; a former warehouse manager for Koehnen’s Interiors; and member of the Juz-Us Hawaii Motorcycle Club. Memorial bike run departs 10 a.m. Friday (Oct. 26) from the Kamehameha statue in Hilo. Celebration of life 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday (Oct. 26) at the Hilo Higashi Hongwanji Hall. Casual attire.
