A day of spiritual exploration at Volcano Art Center

Have you ever tried writing as a spiritual practice — using a pen to deepen the conversation with your soul? Would you like to gain better insight into your life and the world around you by exploring your own thoughts and feelings?

Then join award-winning novelist and longtime Big Island writing teacher Tom Peek for his acclaimed workshop “Zen Pen — Writing as Spiritual Practice” from 9:30 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 20) at the Volcano Art Center Ni‘aulani Campus in Volcano Village.

“Writing is a potent way to understand the human spirit, increase our awareness, examine our lives and foster compassion for others and ourselves,” Peek says.

Cost is $75 pr $65 for VAC members. No writing experience is necessary. Students are asked to bring a personal object from their home, car, workshop, office or boat and a handheld mirror, as well as a lunch.

Paint your own silk scarf at VAC

Open up your creativity and challenge yourself by learning this fun technique. It’s guaranteed to change the way you look at color.

Better yet, you might discover your newest passion.

Join Big Island artist Patti Pease Johnson for the Paint Your Own Silk Scarf workshop from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Oct. 27 at Volcano Art Center.

During this workshop, students will paint their own 8-inch-by-53-inch scarf using three colors of their choice, which will create many more colors on the silk. Pick a main color, then, choose the other two after learning about color theory. Students then will be ready to mix their desired colors, achieved by pre-mixing the four process colors (cyan, magenta, yellow and black).

Plus, during the final hour, students will use hot wax with the tjanting tool on Habotai silk to outline a more representational design and create a resist line for the dyes. Then they will paint and mix colors on the 8-inch-by-8-inch silk artwork.

Pease Johnson will tell you, “It’s all about playing with colors.” Why not reward yourself by creating your very own inspired silk scarf?

Cost for the workshop is $50 or $45 for VAC members, plus a $10 supply fee per person. Beginner and intermediate artists are welcome.

Volcano Art Center’s Ni‘aulani Campus is located at 19-4074 Old Volcano Road in Volcano Village.
