Mayor proclaims October as Alpha Delta Kappa Month

Mayor Harry Kim signed a proclamation last month declaring October as Alpha Delta Kappa Month.

Alpha Delta Kappa is an international honorary organization of more than 30,000 women educators in more than 1,200 chapters worldwide dedicated to educational excellence, altruism and world understanding.

The local chapter, Hawaii Alpha Delta Kappa Delta Chapter, provides support to the island’s public schools and the community through projects such as the ADK Innovation Grant, rubber slipper collection, distribution of sundry products, through hospice and at the Pacific Tsunami Museum. More recently on the international level, Hawaii ADK Delta Chapter helped build classrooms at an orphanage in Haiti and construction of a school in Juanji, Peru.

Club reschedules Durgin presentation

Because of Hurricane Olivia, the Sept. 12 meeting of the Hilo Photography Club was canceled. The presentation by Harry Durgin was rescheduled for Wednesday (Oct. 17).

Puna resident and professional photographer Durgin will describe with narrative and images his efforts to reveal the drama and tragedies of the latest Kilauea eruption in lower Puna. Using precision optics and camera equipment, along with his compositional and post-processing skills, Durgin captured and created fine art images that transcend more traditional documentary photography.

A wide range of images captured on the ground and in the air will be presented.

The Hilo Photography Club meets at 7 p.m. the third Wednesday of each month at the Kamana Senior Center, 127 Kamana St. in Hilo. Admission is free and light refreshments are served during intermission. Membership includes photographers of all ages, ranging from beginner to professional.

Club activities include monthly meetings, photography field trips and workshops.

Memberships are $15 per year.
