The opening reception for the 14th annual Stringed Instrument Show, presented by the Big Island Ukulele Guild, is slated for 5-7 p.m. Friday (Oct. 5) at the Wailoa Center in Hilo.

The reception is free and open to the public. Those who attend will get a chance to meet the artists and enjoy music and pupus.

The exhibit can be viewed from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday through Oct. 25.

In conjunction with the ukulele guild exhibit, drawings for free ukuleles will be hosted during all special events throughout the month. Special events will include Kanikapila events from noon-3 p.m. Saturday (Oct. 6) and Oct. 21 and an ukulele building demonstration from noon-3 p.m. Oct. 13.

The “Jan Ken Po” statewide juried print exhibit, sponsored by the Hawaii Island Art Alliance, will include handmade prints, lithography, intaglio, mokuhanga, screen printing and digital plate prints. The show runs Oct. 5-25 at the Wailoa Center.

Laura Smith, a well-known Honolulu print maker, is this year’s juror and will be conducting a free print demonstration at 9 a.m. Saturday (Oct. 6).

“Color Printing for Everyone” will be a demonstration on relief printing techniques. Learn two easy registration techniques for printing multiple colors. These fool-proof systems produce perfectly registered prints. Color ink mixing techniques and selection of papers also be discussed.
