Police arrest nine for DUI

During the week of Sept. 24-30, Hawaii Island police arrested nine motorists for DUI. Two of the drivers were involved in a traffic accident.

The numbers of arrests by district were: South Hilo, four; Kona, three; and Puna, two.

So far this year, there have been 844 DUI arrests compared to 867 during the same period last year, a decrease of 2.7 percent.

There have been 916 major accidents so far this year compared to 1,012 during the same period last year, a decrease of 9.5 percent.

To date, there have been 24 official traffic fatalities compared to 26 fatalities for the same time last year. This represents a decrease of 7.7 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
