UHH men’s soccer has devlish time with Saint Martin’s

UH-Hilo’s men soccer team was knocked down a peg or two Thursday, absorbing a 4-1 to loss Saint Martin’s, which peppered the Vuls in Lacey, Wash., evening their record at 1-1.

On Tuesday in Bellingham, UH-Hilo turned back myriad Western Washington opportunities to stun the No. 24 Vikings 1-0 in what was one of the program’s greatest triumphs.

There would be no repeat 48 hours later, though Vuls goalkeeper Nick Williams again was busy, making a career-high 12 saves.

Trailing 2-0 at halftime, UH-Hilo got on the board when Matt Wilkinson converted a penalty kick. The junior transfer has both of his team’s goals this season. Hi PK was set up Bryan Gonzalez, who was pulled down in the box.

Sebastian Navarro (21:51), Brandon Madsen (39:56), Jason Fairhurst (65:29) and Will Eldred (77:14) scored goals for the Saints (2-4).

Cayman John did everything but score, firing seven of Saint Martin’s 27 shots. John assisted on his team’s final goal.

In two games, the Vuls have allowed 56 shots and taken 11.

Still, with a match Saturday at Seattle Pacific, they can come home with a winning season-opening road trip.

• No. 12 Oregon swept Hawaii 25-18, 25-23, 25-22 in women’s volleyball at Stan Sheriff Center, evening the Rainbow Wahine’s record at 4-4.

UH was outhit .297-.179.

The teamd play again Friday.

• The Hawaii women’s soccer team remained undefeated on the road this season, tying Nevada 1-1.Leialoha Medeiros notched her third goal of the season for UH (3-2-1).
