Kenji Kuroshima is a bamboo maven, tour guide, tea practitioner, official photographer for the Merrie Monarch Festival and member of the board of directors of Friends of Lili‘uokalani Gardens.

He strongly asserts that “when bamboo is happy, bamboo sings.”

Kuroshima once again will lead a crew of volunteers in periodic cleaning of the bamboo patch at Lili‘uokalani Gardens.

Anyone interested in helping is invited to join in the fun. The next scheduled cleaning is set for 8 a.m.-noon Friday (Aug. 3).

Those who attend should wear gardening clothes, closed-toe shoes and gloves. Glasses or other protective eyewear also are a good idea.

Refreshments will be provided.

Members of the public who want bamboo poles can stop by from 9:30 a.m.-noon at the pile at the edge of the sidewalk on Banyan Drive. The remainder of the pile will be cleared away after noon.
