Bicyclist killed in Kona traffic crash

A 73-year-old Texas man died following a vehicle-bicycle crash this morning on Queen Kaahumanu Highway Route 19 near the 85-mile marker in Kona.

He’s has been identified as Roy Johnson.

Officers responding to a 7:03 a.m. call determined that Johnson was riding a bicycle north on the shoulder when he attempted a U-turn and rode his bicycle directly in front of a silver 2018 Nissan Versa sedan driven by a 30-year-old Czech Republic man was traveling northbound, who collided with Johnson.

Johnson died at the scene. The sedan’s driver was uninjured.

A coroner’s inquest has been opened and an autopsy has been ordered.

Johnson’s death is the 20th official traffic fatality this year, the same number as this time last year.
