A 48-year-old Hilo man died following a single-vehicle crash this morning on Highway 130 in Keaau.

He was identified as Peter Veincent Jr.

Officers responding to a 12:57 a.m. call determined Veincent’s 2001 Mazda sport-utility vehicle was Pahoa bound on Highway 130, crossed the centerline and struck a rock embankment at the intersection of Pohaku Place.

Veincent was taken by ambulance to Hilo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 2:01 a.m.

Veincent wasn’t wearing a seat belt, police don’t yet know if speed or intoxication were factors in this crash.

An autopsy has been ordered to determine the exact cause of death.

Veincent’s death is the 17th official traffic fatality this year compared to 20 at this time last year.

Police ask anyone who witnessed the crash to call Officer Casey Cabral at 961-2329 or Crime Stoppers at 961-8300.
