KAILUA-KONA — Glenn Gray, principal of Holualoa Elementary School, will take over as principal of Kealakehe High School on July 2, the state Department of Education confirmed Tuesday.
He will replace Wil Murakami, who has been principal at Kealakehe High School since the school opened in 1997.
Murakami is retiring at the close of business Saturday, said Lindsay Chambers, media specialist at the Department of Education.
Kealakehe High has the largest student body of any school on Hawaii Island, according to DOE enrollment data.
In 2017-18, the school had a total of 1,311 students. The island’s next largest schools, Waiakea High and Hilo High, had 1,256 and 1,136 students, respectively, according to the data.
Holualoa Elementary, meanwhile, had 516 students during the school year.
Chambers said the department is working to fill the principal position at Holualoa Elementary.
Students head back to class Aug. 6 for the 2018-19 school year.
