• Lauren Carvalho of Hilo graduated from Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University (North Grafton, Mass.) during commencement May 20. Carvalho earned a doctor of veterinarian medicine degree.

• The following Big Island students made the academic dean’s list at Azusa Pacific University (Azusa, Calif.): Elijah Cacal, Amelia Gray, Chasen Jakob, Spencer Todd and April Wong, all of Kailua-Kona; Erin Morikawa and Lindsey Yamane of Hilo; and Megan Tasaki of Keaau. To be honored on the dean’s list, students must have a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher.

• William Perreira of Waimea and Shelly Whitlock of Keaau were among 750 students at Oregon Institute of Technology (Portland, Ore., Metro campus) awarded degrees during commencement June 17. Perreira received a bachelor’s of science degree in electrical engineering; Whitlock received a bachelor’s of science degree in renewable energy engineering. Mark Miguel of Keaau was among more than 700 students from Oregon Institute of Technology (Klamath Falls, Ore., campus) who received degrees during commencement June 16. Miguel received a bachelor’s of science degree in radiologic science.

• Arah Ko of Keaau was named to the spring 2018 dean’s list at Wheaton College (Wheaton, Ill.). Dean’s list honors are earned by students who carry 12 or more credit hours and achieve a 3.5 GPA or higher.

• Katherine Carroll of Kealakekua, a current master’s student in the Global Field Program from Miami University’s Project Dragonfly, recently traveled to Guyana. Carroll studied traditional ecological knowledge of the Makushi and the potential of local wisdom to guide conservation initiatives.

• Chase Takaki of Hilo graduated with a bachelor’s of arts degree in kinesiology from Whitworth University (Spokane, Wash.).

• Thelma Marshall of Hilo was named to Dickinson State University (Dickinson, N.D.) dean’s list for spring 2018. Eligible students must be enrolled full-time and earn a 3.5 GPA or higher.

• Edgar Allan Bartolome of Pepeekeo graduated magna cum laude and received a bachelor’s of science degree in biology from Gonzaga University (Spokane, Wash.) during commencement May 13. He also was named to the Gonzaga spring 2018 dean’s list. Students named to the dean’s list must earn a GPA of 3.5-3.84.

• Aldo Velasquez of Hilo received a master’s of health science degree in physician assistant from Quinnipaiac University (Hamden, Conn.).

• Russell Laros of Kailua-Kona graduated with a bachelor’s of science degree in computer science and business from Lehigh University (Bethlehem, Pa.) during commencement May 21.
