A number of relief efforts are ongoing to support residents affected by the Kilauea volcane eruption in Leilani Estates.
Yukio Okutsu organizes kokua
Yukio Okutsu State Veterans Home residents and staff members will be hosting two events to help those affected by the eruption.
“This is a trying time for our community,” said Yukio Okutsu Administrator David R. Pettijohn. “However we can help, both our staff and residents, we will be there to kokua for those in need.”
Today, the facility is conducting a morning activity with the residents as they put together care packages for those affected. The care packages will consist of small care/toiletry items.
From May 14-18, the facility will host a donation food drive open for community members, staff and families of Hilo to donate any food or other items they can spare.
The drive was organized to encourage the community to come together and give to those in direct need as a result of the eruption. Items needed include nonperishable food items, clothing, blankets and household items.

Items needed for evacuated pets
As Puna residents continue to make contingency plans for their animals and pets, Hawaii Island Humane Society is seeking the community’s help to donate items to care for the evacuated pets.
The following is a donation wish list for HIHS Keaau Shelter. Donations are graciously accepted.
Items can be dropped off at any of the three Hawaii Island Humane Society shelters in Keaau, Waimea and Kona.
• Pet Toys
• Large Crates
• Leashes
• Cat and dog food
• Collars
• Pet bowls
• Towels
Anyone able and willing to assist can call the Keaau shelter at 966-5458 to add their name to the volunteer call list.
If you need help with pets, including supplies and housing, or if you have space in your home to house displaced pets, call the Keaau shelter.
