A 31-year-old man left his family’s vacation home in Kapoho Vacationland subdivision to go swimming in Champagne Pond early Sunday evening and didn’t return, according to the Hawaii Fire Department.

The man’s parents called to report him missing when he didn’t make it back by about 9:30 p.m., according to a written statement.

Police and Fire personnel searched the perimeter of the popular Puna coastline swimming spot and surrounding streets with no results. According to the statement, there is no evidence the man made it to the water.

A more extensive search is being launched today, according to the statement.
