Winner of the silver medal at the 15th Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, pianist Kenny Broberg will perform at 7 p.m. March 29 at the Kahilu Theatre in Waimea.
The Van Cliburn competition is an American contest started in 1962 and is hosted once every four years. The competition takes place during the course of two weeks, where 30 competitors are chosen out of hundreds of applicants and participants perform four live rounds for judges, covering everything from solo performances to concertos.
The 23-year-old Broberg is noted for his remarkable technique, keen musical instincts, and great sensitivity to dynamics, leaving audiences with little doubt as to why he was selected as a Cliburn medalist.
A native of Minneapolis, Broberg is the first musician in his family and has studied piano from age 6. He continued his studies at the University of Houston Moores School of Music, where he earned a bachelor of music degree.
He is now a graduate student at Park University in Parkville, Mo.
His 2017-18 debut season as Cliburn’s silver medalist has him competing and performing in concert halls around the globe. From Sydney to Seattle, his vibrancy and gusto have kept audiences enthralled as he takes them on a journey with “an imaginative shaping of themes, revelation of inner voices and an unfailing sense of momentum,” says the Texas Classical Review.
