CERT training offered in Ka‘u

Would you know how to respond in an emergency or when disaster strikes?

The Hawaii County Civil Defense Agency has scheduled an in-depth, four-day Community Emergency Response Team, or CERT, Basic Training Course in Ka‘u.

The free training will take place over four consecutive Saturdays starting April 7 at the Ocean View Community Center, 92-8924 Leilani Circle.

This CERT Basic Training Course provides participants with classroom and hands-on instruction in safety, fire suppression, first aid, light search and rescue, emergency communications and more.

UH-Hilo hosting media symposium

The public is invited to attend the University of Hawaii at Hilo’s Media Symposium scheduled for 10 a.m.-4 p.m. April 14 in the UH-Hilo Campus Center.

The event is free to the public; lunch will be served.

This year’s theme is “Careers in Media” and the event will feature presentations and panels with media professionals in various fields, including sports and filmmaking.

Anyone with an interest in journalism, writing, photography, art, sports, film, TV or radio will get the chance to interact with some of Hawaii’s top experts in these fields.

Orchidland ballots in mail

The Orchidland Community Association is reminding members to return ballots recently mailed with the March 2018 newsletter.

Recipients are asked to mail ballots to: Neighborhood Place of Puna, 16-105, Opukaha’ia St., Keaau, HI 96749. Ballots also can be dropped off in-person from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday.

4-H to judge giant fruits, vegetables

The 4-H Club is seeking contestants for its 2018 Giant Fruit and Vegetable Contest in Hilo.

Schools or children interested in entering the summer event should contact 4-H by April 1.

Plants will be started and distributed in early June. Seeds for the contest will have the potential to grow giant-size pumpkins (Atlantic, field and squash), tomatoes, watermelons, long gourds, bushel gourds, sunflowers and a limited number of giant carrot, radish and cabbage plants.

The contest also will offer a category for “other” giant-size fruits and vegetables.
