Whitman College senior guard Casey Poe, a 2014 Kamehameha graduate, was voted the NCAA Division III national player of the week on Tuesday. The Northwest Conference tabbed Poe the basketball student-athlete of the week on Monday.
Poe and No. 4 Whitman (14-1, 6-0 NWC) finished off a 2-0 week Friday with a 76-71 home victory over No. 25 George Fox University. Both teams entered the evening unbeaten in league play.
Her four free throws in the final 10 seconds iced the game for the Blues, stretching out a tenuous 73-71 advantage. Poe’s 13-for-14 night at the line was one of the highlights of the preseason All-American’s career-high 29 points.
She also grabbed four rebounds and dished out five assists, with four blocks and five steals.
Earlier in the week, Poe scored 21 points to tie for game-high honors in Whitman’s 101-68 victory over visiting Whitworth University. She again splashed her efforts across the stat sheet, pulling down five defensive rebounds, blocking three shots, coming away with four steals and dishing out a game-high seven assists.
With her 50 points from the week, Poe pushed closer to the 1,000-point plateau. She enters the weekend’s games at Linfield College and Willamette University with a career total of 969 points.
Viking tennis benefit
The Vikings Tennis Booster Club will hold its annual fundraiser Friday at Edith Kanakaole Multipurpose Stadium.
This year there will be two tennis clinic/aerobic sessions. The first session, from 6:30-8 p.m., is designated for juniors (orange ball, green ball, and yellow ball) as well as for adults 3.5 and below (entry and intermediate levels). The second session, from 8:30-10 p.m., is designated for juniors (advanced level) and for adults 3.5 and above (intermediate and advanced levels). Cost for each of these sessions is $20.

UH-Hilo softball clinic is Sunday
The University of Hawaii Hilo softball program will host a clinic from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at the UH-Hilo softball field.
An incorrect date was listed in Tuesday’s edition.
The clinic is available to players ages 8-18 and costs $30.

Rolovich completes staff
UH football head coach Nick Rolovich added three veteran coaches who have a combined 85 years of coaching experience. Joining the staff are Mark Weber as offensive line coach, Ricky Logo as defensive line coach, and Andre Allen as wide receivers coach.
Along with recent additions defensive coordinator Corey Batoon and assistant head coach/linebackers coach Mark Banker, Rolovich has completed his staff of 10 assistant coaches. Remaining on staff are associate head coach/offensive coordinator Brian Smith, passing game coordinator/quarterbacks coach Craig Stutzmann, special teams coordinator Mayur Chaudhari, cornerbacks coach Abe Elimimian, and safeties coach Jacob Yoro.
“During this hiring process, what I didn’t plan on getting was this amount of experience from these five new coaches,” Rolovich said. “An added bonus is they bring a familiarity of the Mountain West.”
Weber has 36 years of collegiate coaching experience most recently in his second stint with Fresno State in 2016. He has stops at four Mountain West schools – Fresno State (2004-05, ’16), Utah State (2013-15), UNLV (1994-96) and Nevada (1993) as well as Pac-12 members UCLA (1997-2003) and Oregon State (1987-90).
Weber has been a part of 16 bowl teams – six with BYU, where he coached prior to USU and five with UCLA – and was a member of five conference championship teams. The 1999 UCLA squad captured the Pac-10 title and appeared in the Rose Bowl while Idaho State went on to win the NCAA Division I-AA National Championship in 1981.
Logo spent the past three years at Colorado State as defensive line coach, helping lead the Rams to three bowl appearances. Prior to that, he coached the defensive line at Houston (2012-14), Furman (2011), Vanderbilt (2007-10), Troy (2002-06), Western Carolina (2002), and UT Chattanooga (1995-2001) during his 23-year coaching career.
Allen has coached the wide receivers at City College of San Francisco since 1991 and has mentored every Top 10 receiver in the program’s history including leading receiver Easop Winston. He served as offensive coordinator for the past 13 years and during that time, the Rams won three national titles and captured eight Northern California Championships.
