A balanced St. Martin’s attack was too much for the Vulcans to overcome Tuesday night in Lacey, Wash., as the Saints raced to an 87-74 victory.
Four St. Martin’s players were in double figures, led by Luke Chavez’s 20 points as the Saints (2-1) spoiled the return of former St. Martin’s standout Trey Ingram, who had 13 points for the Vulcans (1-2).
Ryley Callaghan led UHH with 19 points and six assists. Devin Johnson added 12 points and six rebounds, Randan Berinobis had ten points and six boards and Denhym Brooke added 10 for the Vulcans, who were coming off of a rousing victory Saturday at Western Washington.
The Saints led for nearly all 40 minutes. The Vulcans hit six of its first seven shots but still trailed by four points at 17-13 five minutes into the contest.
Saint Martin’s had a 37-28 rebound edge, including 13-6 on the offensive end. The Vulcans were also cool from 3-point range, converting just six of 22 attempts. The Vulcans had problems inside against 6-7 Jordan Kitchen, who had 17 points and 11 rebounds.
The Saints, who lost to the University of Washington by just four points earlier this season, scored twice in the opening minute of the second half to post their largest lead of the game to that point, 52-37.
The Vulcans continue their five-game stretch in the Pacific Northwest, taking on Central Washington and Seattle Pacific on Friday and Saturday in Seattle.
